Security
Built to be trusted with the money.
The unglamorous parts, done properly: a regulated bank holding the deposits, encryption around anything sensitive, and a name on every movement.
Umbar is a financial technology company, not a bank. Banking services are provided by Increase Bank, Member FDIC, through Increase.
Deposits at a regulated bank
Increase Bank, Member FDIC, holds the money. Umbar never does.
Encrypted at rest
Umbar keeps only the last four digits of your account numbers; the full number comes from the bank for the moment you ask to see it. Bank details typed for your invoices and bank connection credentials are encrypted with AES-256-GCM.
A name on everything
Owners and admins move money; members keep the books. Every card and payment carries who issued or sent it.
Verified messages from the bank
Every event the bank sends is checked against its signature before it touches your books.
Card numbers shown by the bank
Full card details are displayed by the bank inside a secure frame on the Cards page. They never pass through Umbar.
Books you can close
Lock a period and nothing inside it changes. Reconcile against the bank's statements and take everything out as CSV or PDF, any time.
How it works
From nothing to an account, a card and a set of books.
- 01
Open the account
About ten minutes: the business's details, a controlling officer and every owner of 25% or more. Increase verifies them, most within minutes, and the account opens with its own routing and account numbers.
- 02
Move your money in
Give customers the numbers, wire in from your old bank, or connect it through Plaid and keep both. Issue a card. Open a second account for taxes.
- 03
Run the business
The books keep up on their own. Open the statements when a lender, a partner or your accountant asks, and hand them over as PDF.

Questions
The questions people ask before they open one.
Is Umbar a bank?
No. Umbar is a financial technology company. The accounts and cards are provided by Increase Bank, Member FDIC, through Increase, and the bank holds the money. Umbar gives you the experience and keeps the books.
Is my money insured?
Deposits are held at Increase Bank, Member FDIC, and are eligible for FDIC insurance up to $250,000 per depositor, for each ownership category, through pass-through coverage and subject to the FDIC's rules.
Can I keep my current bank?
Yes. Connect it through Plaid and its transactions flow into the same ledger. Many businesses run both for a while and move over as the invoices start landing in Umbar.
What do payments cost?
ACH payments and transfers between your own accounts are free. Wire pricing is set by the bank.
How fast is a wire?
Domestic wires go out through the Fedwire network. Sent before the bank's cutoff, they usually arrive the same business day, and the Fedwire confirmation number is on the payment's details. Every wire is reviewed on screen before it is sent, and wires are final once sent.
Who can see the account numbers?
Owners and admins, and only when they ask: the full account number is fetched from the bank for a moment and never stored by Umbar. Card numbers are displayed by the bank inside a secure frame and never pass through Umbar.
Is the account really free?
Yes. The Banking plan has no monthly fee and includes every banking feature: the account, cards, ACH and wires, statements. The books are the part you pay for, and you can add them at any time.
What if I only want the bookkeeping?
Choose Books or Scale. The full ledger, connected accounts, CSV import, invoices and reports are all included, and the bank account is there when you want it.
Open the account. The books come with it.
Ten minutes to apply, a virtual card the moment the account opens, and a balance sheet that is right from the first deposit.
